Black Americana Chalk Ware Figurine Vintage Collectibles

Black collectibles (circa 1920 to 1950’s) produced in several countries (USA, Japan and Europe).

Usually feature black people in stereotypical situations such as performing household duties. After the 1950’s (post civil rights movement) black collectibles were considered insulting and derogatory and many pieces were destroyed and production of these pieces came to an end. However, in the 1970’s interest in these pieces returned especially among high profile African Americans. Black Americana collectors have brought profile to these pieces resulting in prices to rise.

Two Vintage Keepers! Black Americana at its best.

What a great find, two chalk ware decorative plaques. One is of a little girl holding her parasol and the other is of a little boy holding an umbrella. Beautifully hand painted, lots of attention to detail, colors are vivid bright and cheerful. Both the little girl and little boy have happy expressions on their faces bordering on adorable. I love the texture of the hair (you can see in the pictures the attention to detail). Both of them have good body language movement.

What I really like about these two pieces is their condition. In my opinion I would categorize these pieces as being in mint vintage condition, that is not to say they are in perfect condition. Chalk ware is fragile media therefore I am covering myself by saying that they are in Mint "vintage" condition. I have dealt with allot of black Americana chalk ware I would have to categorize these two pieces as in fabulous condition - see all pictures. This is not to say you won’t find imperfections - there are no breaks or cracks compromising these two figures. They have been packed away for a very long time until I came across them.

The boy measures 8-1/2" inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide at the base.

The girl measures 8-1/2" inches high by 5-1/2 inches at the widest part of the parasol.
